NATIONAL OFFICE RECOGNIZES 50 YEAR MEMBER

 

MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR RON DILATUSH, WHO ATTENDED OUR CHAPTERS 50TH ANNIVERSARY SCHOLAR ATHLETE DINNER LAST APRIL, SURPRISED LONG TIME MEMBER VINCENT “VINNY” AITRO WHEN HE SENT HIM A CERTIFICATE AS A LIFETIME MEMBER IN THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL FOUNDATION HALL OF FAME CLUB. THE CERTIFICATE WAS SIGNED BY ARCHIE MANNING NFF CHAIRMAN AND STEVE HATCHELL NFF PRESIDENT AND CEO. VIN WILL BE 99 YEARS OLD ON APRIL 13 AND HAS BEEN A MEMBER FOR THE PAST 50 YEARS. HE AND HIS TWIN BROTHER CARMEN, WHO PASSED AWAY IN 1998, WERE PRESENTED THE CHAPTER AWARD OF MERIT IN 1976. CHAPTER PRESIDENT BILL O’BRIEN PAID A HOLIDAY VISIT TO VINNY, WHO STILL LIVES IN HIS HOME AT 46 HELLSTROM RD IN EAST HAVEN, AND HE ASKED TO BE REMEMBERED TO HIS FRIENDS AND FELLOW MEMBERS IN THE CHAPTER.  HE WOULD ENJOY RECEIVING A CARD OR HEARING FROM ANY CHAPTER MEMBERS.

 

CHAPTER MEMBERS MEET FOUNDATION LEADERSHIP

         

CHAPTER MEMBERS ATTENDED THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL FOUNDATION CHAPTER LEADERSHIP LUNCHEON IN NEW YORK CITY IN DECEMBER AND MEET WITH THE EXECUTIVE OFFICERS OF OUR NATIONAL OFFICE, IN TOWN FOR THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION DINNER HELD AT THE WALDORF. PICTURED ABOVE IN THE LEFT PHOTO IS NEW HAVEN COUNTY CHAPTER PRESIDENT BILL O’BRIEN WITH STEVE HATCHELL, NFF PRESIDENT AND CEO, AND ARCHIE MANNING, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD. THE CHAPTER WAS COMMENDED FOR CELEBRATING OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER LAST SPRING.

 

JOHN MOFFITT SELECTED WALTER CAMP

CONNECTICUT PLAYER OF THE YEAR

 

JOHN MOFFITT, A NATIVE OF GUILFORD AND 2006 GRADUATE OF NOTRE DAME HIGH SCHOOL HAS BEEN SELECTED CONNECTICUT PLAYER OF THE YEAR BY THE WALTER CAMP FOOTBALL FOUNDATION. HE WILL BE HONORED WITH MEMBERS OF THE WALTER CAMP  ALL AMERICAN TEAM ON SATURDAY JANUARY 15 AT THE HISTORIC YALE COMMONS. INFORMATION ON THE DINNER AND OTHER WEEKEND ACTIVITIES CAN BE FOUND ON THE CAMP WEB SITE WWW.WALTERCAMP.ORG. MOFFITT IS A 6’3” 323 POUND OFFENSIVE LINEMAN ON THE HIGH POWERED 4TH RANK BADGERS SET TO PLAY TCU IN THE ROSE BOWL ON NEW YEARS DAY.  HE WAS SELECTED FIRST TEAM ALL BIG TEN AND AN ASSOCIATED PRESS FIRST TEAM ALL AMERICAN. WHILE AT NOTRE DAME JOHN WAS ALL SCC FOR TWO YEARS AND A CONSENSUS ALL STATE PLAYER. CHAPTER MEMBER AND FORMER DISTINGUISHED AMERICAN AWARD WINNER DR RICH DIANA WAS THE FIRST RECEPIENT OF THE CAMP AWARD IN 1981. OTHER CHAPTER WINNERS INCLUDE TAREK SALEH, NOTRE DAME/WISCONSIN A TWO TIME WINNER IN 1995 AND 1996, KYLE MC INTOSH, CHESHIRE/SYRACUSE 1997, CARL BOND, HAMDEN HALL/UCONN 1998, BOBBY MYERS HAMDEN/WISCONSIN 1999, PETER MAZZA, CHESHIRE/YALE 2000, DAN ORLOVSKY, SHELTON/UCONN ALSO A TWO TIME WINNER IN 2003-2004 WHO SHARED THE AWARD WITH ANTTAJ HAWTHORNE HAMDEN/WISCONSIN IN 2004.

 

 

The Hillhouse Academics and coach Tom Dyer celebrated a hard fought 7-0 victory

over New London to win the Class M State Championship at Rentschler Field.

CHAPTER CLAIMS TWO MORE STATE TITLES


       ELEVEN CHAPTER SCHOOLS QUALIFY FOR PLAYOFFS

Once again the New Haven County Chapter had another outstanding year with state titles being won by Xavier in Class LL and Hillhouse and Class M. In total 11 chapter schools qualified for the playoffs. Woodland, Hyde and Ansonia were in Class S, Hillhouse, Platt and Lyman Hall in Class M, Hand, North Haven and Naugatuck in Class L and Xavier and West Haven in Class LL.

Unfortunately the quarterfinals pitted chapter teams against each other with Xavier vs. West Haven, Hand vs. North Haven and Ansonia vs. Hyde. Xavier went on to win the LL title, Ansonia advanced to the championship game before losing to St Joseph and Hand went to the semi’s bowing to old nemesis New Canaan.  Hillhouse was the eighth seed and defeated number one seed Berlin 33-30 and Gilbert/NW Regional 42-14 before earning a hard fought 7-0 victory over New London in the Class S title game. Xavier defeated West Haven 28-7, Glastonbury 24-13 and Trumbull 24-13 in the Class LL title game.

The New Haven Register Final Top 10 Poll ranked four New Haven County teams Xavier #1, Hillhouse #6, Hand #8 and Ansonia #9. Our colleagues from Fairfield County also had four schools in the top 10, Masuk #2, New Canaan #3, St Joseph #4 and Trumbull #5 involving 8 of the top ten schools in the annual Hall of Fame Classic All Star game scheduled for July 9.

    ED MC CARTHY TO COACH CHAPTER TEAM IN 15TH ANNUAL HALL OF FAME CLASSIC

 

LEGENDARY CHAPTER COACH ED MC CARTHY HAS BEEN CHOSEN THE HEAD COACH NEW HAVEN COUNTY ALL STAR TEAM IN THE 15TH ANNUAL HALL OF FAME CLASSIC. THE GAME IS SCHEDULED FOR JULY 8 AT KEN STRONG STADIUM AT WEST HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL  AGAINST THE FAIRFIELD COUTY ALL STARS. THE VETERAN COACH RECENTLY WON THE 300TH GAME OF HIS CAREER THAT BEGAN AT ST. JOSEPH HIGH SCHOOL. HE HAS THE MOST WINS OF ANY ACTIVE COACH IN THE STATE. HE JUST FINISHED HIS 28TH YEAR AT WEST HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL LEADING THE BLUE DEVILS TO THE CLASS LL PLAYOFFS. HE HAS WON A TOTAL OF 7 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS INCLUDING 4 AT WEST HAVEN AND 3 FOR THE CADETS. MC CARTHY WAS THE FIRST COACH OF THE HALL OF FAME CLASSIC FOR NEW HAVEN COUNTY A 14-7 VICTORY OVER FAIRFIELD COUNTY IN 1997.

CHAPTER PRESIDENT BILL O’BRIEN SAID, “WE ARE THRILLED TO HAVE COACH  MC CARTHY LEAD OUR CHAPTER TEAM ONCE AGAIN. HIS MANY YEARS AS A WINNING COACH MAKES HIM AN IDEAL CHOICE TO WORK WITH OUR COUNTY ALL STARS”.

NEW SPONSORS JOIN HALL OF FAME CLASSIC

 

 THE 15TH ANNUAL HALL OF FAME CLASSIC WILL HAVE TWO NEW SPONSORS THIS YEAR WITH THE EDITION OF JL SPORTS OF BRANFORD AND NFP SPORTS OF NEWINGTON. JL SPORTS IN OWNED BY FORMER YALE FOOTBALL PLAYER JOE LINTA WHO REPRESENTS OVER 40 PLAYERS IN THE NFL. AMONG LINTA’S CLIENTS IS JOE FLACKO QUATERBACK OF THE BALTIMORE RAVENS. NFP SPORTS (NATIONAL FUNDRAISING PARTNERS) ARE PROFESSIONAL FUND-

RAISERS WHO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS TEAMS. MEMBERS OF THE CONNECTICUT TEAM INCLUDE KEVIN DIGBY, DON CROUCH AND JAMES THOMSON. THEY WILL JOIN LONG TIME SPONSORS THE WALTER CAMP FOOTBALL FOUNDATION, NEW HAVEN REGISTER, TOWN FAIR TIRE COMPANY AND DICKS SPORTING GOODS. THIS YEARS GAME WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY JULY 8 AT KEN STRONG STADIUM AT WEST HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL.   

 

CHAPTER CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY

The Gene Casey New Haven County Chapter celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of the chapter at the annual scholar athlete dinner on Friday April 23 at Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. The gala was attended by almost 500 including 130 former scholar athletes and past award winners.

 

The honorees this year included 30 new scholar athletes along with UConn coach Randy Edsall who was presented with the Distinguished American Award joining a long list of previous honorees. Tom Marcucci of Notre Dame High School was selected the chapter Coach of the Year, Tony Fontana, long time member and owner of Val’s Formal Wear in Orange, the Chapter Award of Merit and veteran official Jim Brennan with the Official Recognition Award.

 

Also participating at this year’s event was Donald Lewis from the first scholar athlete group honored in 1962 and Matt Vece

of North Haven High School representing this year’s scholar athletes. Chapter Past President Larry McHugh returned to give an overview of the early years of the chapter and Hall of Fame Coach, and chapter member Carmen Cozza, dazzled the audience with his stories of some of his kickers at Yale over his 32 years as Head Coach.

 

Representing the National Football Foundation were Ron Dilatush Director of Membership who came from Irving, Texas and Howie Vanderesea Northeast Region Coordinator who came from the State of Maine. Cited for their long term dedication were scholar athlete chair Dan Martin who has chaired the selection committee for 32 years and Chaplin Rev Owen Sanderson who has been Chaplin for 40 years.
